DHEA “The Fountain of Youth”

Welcome to the final week of Hot Hormone Summer!

This week, Dr. Ramsey dives into DHEA. This is a hormone that’s often called the “fountain of youth” for its role in inflammation, heart health, and energy.

What is DHEA?
DHEA stands for dehydroepiandrosterone, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It’s considered a weak androgen, meaning it can convert to testosterone, but usually not enough for men to feel a huge difference on its own.

Why DHEA Matters

  • Inflammation: Studies show higher DHEA levels are linked to lower inflammatory markers like Interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha.

  • Heart Health: In men, higher DHEA is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease as they age.

  • Energy & Stress: Many patients notice improvements in energy, stress handling, and even belly fat reduction when taking DHEA alongside testosterone.

DHEA in Men vs. Women

  • Men: Most tolerate DHEA well, especially when combined with testosterone. For men concerned about hair thinning, Dr. Ramsey introduces DHEA gradually.

  • Women: DHEA is less well-tolerated, with possible side effects like acne and scalp hair changes. Women with low testosterone may tolerate it better, but testosterone remains the primary androgen used in practice.

Should You Try DHEA?
If you’re looking to reduce inflammation or support heart health, and you’re not currently on testosterone, DHEA may be worth exploring. Always be aware of side effects and work with a provider experienced in hormone therapy.
