Welcome to Week 1 of Hot Hormone Summer!
Each week, we’re breaking down essential (and often misunderstood) topics in hormone health for both men and women. Today, Dr. Ramsey explains a condition many men don’t even know they’re experiencing: andropause.
What Is Andropause?
Andropause refers to the natural decline in testosterone that occurs as men age. Just as women go through menopause, men go through andropause, though it tends to happen more gradually and is often overlooked.
Testosterone (along with DHEA, another androgen) is crucial for energy, metabolism, mood, sexual function, and overall vitality. While women also produce testosterone, men produce much more which is why the effects of low levels can be so significant.
Symptoms of Andropause
As testosterone declines, men may begin to experience:
-
Fatigue
-
Weight gain
-
Insomnia
-
Low stamina
-
Depression
-
Erectile dysfunction
These symptoms are often brushed off as “just aging,” but low testosterone is a treatable root cause that shouldn’t be ignored.
The Bigger Health Risks
Beyond the symptoms, low testosterone can increase the risk for serious age-related diseases. Dr. Ramsey emphasizes that lower testosterone has been linked to:
-
Higher risk of prostate cancer
-
Increased cardiovascular disease risk
Contrary to outdated beliefs, testosterone therapy can actually protect the prostate and reduce the likelihood of developing prostate cancer. It also helps mitigate heart disease risk as men age.
The Bottom Line
Andropause isn’t just about energy or libido. It’s about aging well and protecting long-term health.
